What the licence check tells you
Physician means doctor. A state medical board is the agency that licenses doctors. Its website shows whether a doctor has a licence and whether the board reports a penalty or formal charges.
Care delivered through video, phone calls or online messages is called telehealth.
As of September 26, 2026, telehealth licensing guidance said doctors need the state’s permission wherever their patient is located for the visit.
The doctor’s licence in their own state may not give them permission to treat you in yours.
Some states allow a telehealth registration in place of a full local licence. The state’s own rules decide what permission is needed.
How to check a physician’s record
Get the person’s details
Ask for the physician’s full name, licence number and the state where that licence is held.
Open the state board directory
Find the appropriate agency through the Federation of State Medical Boards directory. Choose the board covering your location at the time of the visit.
Match the public record
Search the board’s own site. Compare the name and licence details. Check whether the doctor can practise now and whether the board reports a penalty or formal charges.
Keep what needs explaining
Ask the service about a mismatch or unclear entry. Keep the question beside the record before deciding.
Read the record within its limits
A website showing no penalty does not establish the quality of the doctor’s care. What a board publishes also varies by state.
Some states use more than one board for doctor licences. The directory includes those boards.
For a nurse practitioner or physician assistant who prescribes, first identify the state agency that issues their licence, then check its website. This doctor directory does not list those health professionals.
